We are looking forward to another fall weekend at Camp Namanu! It’s a great opportunity to make new connections, relax and enjoy some outdoor time with your kids. The ever popular Virginia Reel will be held along with lots of other fun activities.

Registration opens at the FCC Chinese New Year Event January 21, 2012. If you are not attending Chinese New Year you can download a registration form from our site at: www.fccfamilycamp.com/Welcome.html after that date and mail the forms to us.

For those attending the CNY dinner, The Family Camp raffle basket at Chinese New Year will include tuition for one adult and one child to attend Camp this year.

Mandarin Classes to begin in February!

FCC Member and Mandarin Teacher, Kristina Knight is setting up Mandarin classes to begin in February, at 55th and SE Belmont. TaborSpace has lots of free parking and a nice conference room.

Daytime Slot To Be Decided: 10-11am Wed. or 1:40 pm to 2:40 pm Fridays (there is a chance a downtown Portland location may be chosen for this time slot).

Evening Slot To Be Decided: Mon. from 6:30 to 7:30 pm or Wed. from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

If there are 6 or more people, the cost is $17/hr for the class ($136 per person for 8 weeks); 3-5 people, $20/hour ($160 for 8 weeks); 2 people, $25/hour ($200 for 8 weeks).

FCC 2012 Chinese New Year Celebration

The celebration is being held at H.K. Cafe, 4410 SE 82nd Avenue, Portland, OR, 97666. Registration is required by January 7, 2012.

Come celebrate this family-oriented holiday with fun games, activities for all ages, and lunch at a beautiful park with a great playground! Hot dogs, burgers, and lemonade will be provided.

2011 Portland Dragon Boat Races, Sept. 10th

This event runs all weekend, but FCC will be at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in front of the big tree in the middle of the “bowl area” from 9-noon on Saturday morning.

Come early if you’d like to see the fire boat display on the river or to get up close and personal with the dragon boats. Feel free to bring a blanket or low lawn chairs.

This Saturday, August 13th: China Homeland Tour Presentation, PSU Campus

Join us this Saturday, August 13th, as Michael Han of Always and Forever Adoption Homeland Tours will discuss: the importance to adopted children of visiting their birthplace; psychological issues; travel issues; when to travel in terms of age of child and time of year; preparation for returning to orphanages; what to expect during the visit; information on tour programs and services Always and Forever provides.

Following Michael’s presentation is a panel discussion. Some parents will share their tour experiences (both group tours and customized solo trips) and their stories of orphanage visits.

There will be plenty of time for questions and informal discussion. You may bring your kids if they would like to see the pictures and ask their own questions about preparing for and traveling back to China! Be aware that some of the topics related to orphanage visits and birth family search may be sensitive to children.

Teen Event: BBQ & Swim Party ~ July 24th

In order to provide more activities and avenues for connection for our kids as they grow up, FCC has added a Teen Ambassador to our board. WELCOME CAITLIN!! And thank you for volunteering your time!

Caitlin is organizing a Teen BBQ & Swim Party at the Mt. Scott Community Center & Pool, 5530 SE 72nd Ave, on Sunday, July 24th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Lunch will start at 11:30 (SITE E) with an optional swim from 1-4 p.m.

Teens are encouraged to bring a friend (or two) for a fun afternoon.

Cost: $5 per teen, to cover lunch and swimming

New Online Network for Chinese Adoptees

We received information about a new group formed by two teenage adoptees called China’s Children International. The girls asked that we spread the word about their new organization: The mission of CCI is to unite people born in China and adopted and raised by families all over the world. CCI hopes to provide an extensive network of support for all of us who share this common beginning. It is a network created by adoptees for adoptees. CCI aims to promote the growing importance and interest in China’s history, culture, and increasingly important relations with people and cultures throughout the world.

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO AUGUST 11th: Lake Oswego Mandarin Immersion Programs

The Lake Oswego School District (LOSD) Mandarin Immersion Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten programs are located at Palisades Elementary School. These programs are open to all children residing within the LOSD boundaries.

The goals are to prepare children emotionally and socially for their first years in school, as well as to provide opportunities to learn through discovery in areas such as, math, science, art, music, and literature. The instructor will be immersing children in the Mandarin language, culture and traditions.

Parents will be provided with a monthly curriculum schedule and updates on children’s activities. Children will be part of the Palisades school community, attending school functions and special performances, and will be given the opportunity to learn and explore in a child-centered environment.

Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten classes are offered through the LOSD Extended Day Program. All early childhood education programs follow the Lake Oswego School District calendar.

Mandarin Immersion Preschool*

Age:	Three years old on or before September 1
Time:	Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
Class size:	Up to eight students with one instructor.
Cost:	$235 per month, $25 registration fee

Mandarin Immersion Pre-Kindergarten*

Age:	Four years old on or before September 1
Time:	Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 8:50 a.m.-1 p.m.
Class size:	Up to ten students with one instructor
Cost:	$330 per month, $25 registration fee

The Lake Oswego School District will offer two half-day Kindergarten Mandarin Immersion classes in 2011-12, contingent upon hiring qualified staff and on achieving sufficient enrollment to support the program.

These classes will be located at River Grove Elementary School . Instruction time is 50% in Mandarin and 50% in English. The literacy component of instruction employs the Read Well program, which is the district’s early childhood reading curriculum.

The Kindergarten Mandarin Immersion Program is a stand-alone program. Enrollment in this program does not guarantee placement in next-level programs that may be added to LOSD offerings. To date, no commitment has been made to continue this program beyond the kindergarten level.

Enrollment in the Kindergarten Mandarin Immersion Program will be conducted by lottery. Those wishing to participate in the lottery must submit their application to the District Administration Office no later than 3:30 PM on Friday, July 15, 2011. Parents interested in enrolling their students should complete and submit the application form as soon as possible.
